What is Software Piracy?

Software piracy, or unlicensed software is the unauthorized copying or distribution of copyrighted software. This can be done by copying, downloading, sharing, selling, or installing multiple copies onto personal or work computers. It is illegal, increases security risks and results in economic harm such as loss of jobs and tax revenue.

How Does Piracy Impact You?

Piracy of our products harms unsuspecting customers and legitimate businesses. It hurts the entire industry - the consumer, publisher, wholesalers, resellers, and the Mom & Pop business. Illegal piracted products are generally poor quality, lack technical support and can contain harmful viruses. When customers report piracy and purchase from licensed resellers, it levels the playing field for honest resellers so that everyone can take advantage of the benefits genuine "Official License Product" has to offer.

FBI Anti-Piracy
You can report software piracy online through the Business Software Alliance (BSA). The BSA is a nonprofit trade association created to advance the goals of the software industry and its hardware partners. It is the foremost organization dedicated to promoting a safe and legal digital world. It is BSA's strict policy to keep all information about you confidential. Software piracy is the unauthorized copying or distribution of copyrighted software. This can be done by copying, downloading, sharing, selling, or installing multiple copies onto personal or work computers. When you purchase software, you are actually purchasing a license to use it, not the actual software. The license is what tells you how many times you can install the software, therefore it’s important to read and understand it. If you make more copies of the software than the license permits, you are pirating and thus breaking the law. Whether you are casually making a few copies for friends, loaning CDs, downloading or distributing pirated software from the Internet, or buying a single software program and then installing it on multiple computers, you are committing copyright infringement—this is software piracy.
